Description of Process

During a safety information sharing sessions with airfield operators, the following was circulated to all applicable participants. As a result, all helicopter operators will be adopting the following safety precaution.

Description of Incident

During a security x-ray baggage search, the operator observed electronic equipment in a passengers footwear.

The footwear was removed and the passenger advised the operator he had self-lacing Nike Adapt footwear.

This type of footwear contains a motor and battery to give the wearer comfort fit without any laces or straps. The footwear contains a rechargeable device which can be activated with a mobile phone or smart watch app. It also has a charging plate to recharge the footwear when placed on the plate. The charge can last up to 2 weeks.

Good Practice Guidance

Safety Precaution:

The CAA Dangerous Goods department have prohibited the carriage of this type of footwear pending investigation. Until further notice, passengers will not be permitted to take Nike Adapt footwear offshore.
